A holiday park in Byron Bay has embraced an initiative provided by Rous to improve its water efficiency and reduce utility costs.

First Sun Holiday Park recently welcomed Rous staff onsite to conduct a thorough water assessment of the park through its Rous Sustainable Water Partner Program.

The findings of the assessment – conducted in partnership with Byron Shire Council – will be used to develop a tailored water efficiency plan for the park, outlining specific strategies and recommendations for reducing water consumption.

The collaboration is a positive example of how businesses in the Northern Rivers tourism sector can be empowered to contribute to a more sustainable future, according to Andrew Logan, Group Manager Planning and Delivery.

“This initiative is not just about reducing water consumption; it is about providing real examples for others in the region to follow suit, creating a ripple effect of positive change,” said Andrew Logan.

“By partnering with businesses, we aim to optimise water consumption and minimise the impact on our region’s precious water supply.

“These efforts offer significant environmental, social, and economic benefit, including reduced pressure on water infrastructure, healthier rivers (due to less extraction from rivers and aquifers), and reduced demand on the region’s water supply.

“Despite the recent heavy rain, our water supply isn’t endless. It’s important we all do our part to use water mindfully and keep this precious resource available for everyone.”

First Sun Holiday Park Manager, Emma, expressed enthusiasm about the assessment and the potential for implementing water-saving measures.

“We understand the importance of preserving water resources in this beautiful region, and we are committed to doing our part to minimise our environmental footprint” she said.

“We’re excited to collaborate with the team and implement their recommendations.”‘

The on-site assessment involved a thorough review of various aspects of the park’s operations, and included:
 Water usage in the park’s amenities and facilities with options provided for low-flow fixtures and other water-saving technologies.
 Checks for any hidden leaks in pipes that could be contributing to water loss through visual inspections and data logging technology. By analysing this data, the team can detect even the smallest, most elusive leaks, often hidden underground or within walls, which would otherwise go undetected.
 Evaluating the condition and layout of the park’s network of pipes which supply water to individual caravan sites.

Rous is dedicated to working with local businesses to eliminate water waste and achieve substantial water savings through the Rous Sustainable Water Partner Program.
