Rous has identified elevated levels of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) in the waters of Emigrant Creek Dam, placing the dam in a Green Alert Status.

Testing has confirmed the presence of microcystis aeruginosa. While the current concentrations are minor, some blue-green algae species can produce toxins that may pose health risks to humans, livestock, and pets.

Although the alert applies specifically to the dam, the public is advised to avoid contact with the waters of Emigrant Creek until the concentration of potentially toxic species has decreased.

Until further notice, the following uses are not recommended:

  • Recreational activities involving direct water contact (e.g. swimming, water skiing, kayaking)
  • Domestic use (e.g. drinking, cooking, bathing)
  • Agricultural use, including stock watering and irrigation of edible crops

Monitoring is ongoing. Rous is undertaking aquatic weed harvesting to reduce the nutrient load within the dam. Updates will be provided as additional monitoring results become available.

Please note, drinking water provided by Rous remains safe to drink as it is not being sourced by Emigrant Creek Dam during this time.
