Rous County Council (Rous) welcomes the NSW Government’s ongoing commitment to reducing water loss and improving water efficiency across the state.
As part of the Active Leak Detection Project, more than 130 kilometres of water pipelines (less than 100 mm in diameter) across Rous’ network were examined for potential leaks.
The project identified 19 leaks, resulting in water savings of approximately 99.7 litres per minute. While this figure is below the NSW regional median, the initiative has provided valuable insights into system performance and supports ongoing efforts to improve water sustainability within the region.

The project was delivered by Aqua Analytics, a contractor specialising in acoustic leak detection. Using innovative equipment, Aqua Analytics can detect leaks with pinpoint accuracy, enabling Rous to prioritise and carry out necessary repair works efficiently.
The Active Leak Detection Project is part of the NSW Government’s $35.3 million Water Efficiency and Regional Leakage Reduction Program. To date, 24,500 kilometres of water mains have been surveyed, over 3950 leaks have been found, and 8,220ML/year of water leaks have been repaired by regional Councils.
This marks the second time Rous has participated in this valuable program, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable water management and infrastructure efficiency across the Northern Rivers region.
In addition to infrastructure upgrades, Rous continues to support long-term water conservation through its My Rous App. The app empowers direct water customers to monitor their water use, detect potential leaks early, and help to make informed choices about their water consumption.
