Byron Bay Water Main Upgrade: PROJECT COMPLETION

February 2026

Rous is pleased to announce that the Byron Bay Water Main Upgrade is complete, with drinking water now flowing through the new pipeline.

Commencing in August 2025, almost 1,000m of pipeline along Bangalow Road and Paterson Street was replaced, enabling higher volumes of water to meet increasing demand.

We would like to thank the teams at Ledonne Constructions and Byron Shire Council, and especially the local community for your patience, friendly greetings as you travelled past, and even providing the team with refreshments on a hot day. Your support was noticed and truly appreciated.

The Byron Bay Watermain Upgrade project was managed and funded by Rous as part of its Capital Works Delivery Program, aimed at strengthening the region’s water network.

Byron Bay Water Main Upgrade Project: UPDATE

December – January 2026

Rous is pleased to share that the majority of the water main pipeline in Byron Bay has been replaced. We sincerely thank the local community for your support while these works were underway.

However, due to unforeseen events during construction, minor restoration works will resume after the New Year holiday period on Monday 5 January 2026.

These final works include repairs to footpaths, road surfaces, and line marking. During this time, intermittent lane closures may be required which could result in minor traffic disruptions.

We advise commuters to check the VMS signs for updated traffic information.

Thank you to the local community, road users, businesses, visitors to the region, and our partners at Byron Shire Council, for your continued support and patience as these important upgrades are delivered.

Rous has commenced major upgrades to a key section of the Byron Bay water pipeline, an important project set to enhance the town’s water supply capacity and reliability.

August – December 2025

The works will involve replacing almost 1,000m of the existing pipeline, installed in 1952, as part of renewal works.

This work will include upgrading the water main from 200mm to 300mm in diameter, enabling higher volumes of water to meet increasing demand, particularly during peak usage periods.

Works commenced 18 August 2025 and are expected to be completed in early December 2025.

During this time, traffic speed restrictions and occasional partial road closures will be in place. Any works requiring partial road closures along Bangalow Road will occur during off-peak times (not during the hours of 7am to 9.30am or 3.00pm to 5.30pm).

Cyclists, in particular, are encouraged to follow signage and traffic controllers, as there will be changes to the cycle lanes along this part of Bangalow Road.

Updates will be provided on digital billboards stationed along Bangalow Road and commuters are encouraged to check Rous’ website and social media.

Rous is taking all possible precautions to minimise the disruption to traffic and has scheduled the works to commence during the off-peak tourist season and typically drier winter and spring months.

Local businesses, bus companies and schools have been notified, and Rous will ensure the on-site contractor provides updates should there be unexpected delays.

The Contractor for the works is Ledonne Constructions Pty Ltd, a pipeline contractor with significant local experience and a solid reputation for high quality work in difficult situations.

This project is managed and fully funded by Rous and is part of its Capital Works Delivery Program. It is just one example of how Rous is strengthening its infrastructure to ensure the region continues to receive reliable drinking water now and into the future.

Project updates will be provided. Rous sincerely thanks the local community, road users, businesses, visitors to the region, and our partners at Byron Shire Council, for their ongoing support and patience as these important upgrades are delivered.
