Rous will commence major upgrades to a key section of the Byron Bay water pipeline in mid-August 2025, an important project set to enhance the town’s water supply capacity and reliability.

The works will involve replacing almost 1,000m of the existing pipeline along Bangalow Road and Paterson Street, installed in 1952, as part of renewal works.

This work will include upgrading the water main from 200mm to 300mm in diameter, enabling higher volumes of water to meet increasing demand, particularly during peak usage periods.

Works are anticipated to commence Monday 18 August and be completed in early December 2025.

Updates will be provided on digital billboards stationed along Bangalow Road and commuters are encouraged to check Rous’ website and social media.

During this time, traffic speed restrictions and occasional partial road closures will be in place.

Any works requiring partial road closures will occur during off-peak times (not during the hours of 7am to 9.30am or 3.00pm to 5.30pm). Cyclists, in particular, are encouraged to follow signage and traffic controllers, as there will be changes to the cycle lanes along this part of Bangalow Road.

Rous is taking all possible precautions to minimise potential traffic disruptions, according to Andrew Logan, Group Manager Planning and Delivery, Rous.

“Rous has purposefully scheduled the works to commence during the off-peak tourist season and typically drier winter and spring months,” said Andrew Logan.

“The current water pipeline is more than 70 years old—it’s time for it to be replaced.

“While we are required to upgrade the existing section of pipeline, Rous is also taking this opportunity to increase its size—from 200mm to 300mm—to allow greater volumes of water to be delivered to the Byron Bay region.

“Increasing the size of the pipeline will help us meet higher demand for drinking water during peak periods and support the region’s growing population and tourism industry.

“Our Contractor for the works is Ledonne Constructions Pty Ltd, a pipeline contractor with significant local experience and a solid reputation for high quality work in difficult situations.”

The Byron Bay Watermain Upgrade project is managed and funded by Rous as part of its Capital Works Delivery Program.

This project is a part of Rous’ broader program of infrastructure works aimed at strengthening the region’s water network, according to Phillip Rudd, General Manager, Rous.

“The Byron Bay Watermain Project is just one example of how Rous is continually investing in essential infrastructure to ensure our communities have access to reliable, high-quality drinking water—now and into the future,” said Phillip Rudd.

“On behalf of Rous, I would like to thank the local community, road users, businesses, visitors to the region, and our partners at Byron Shire Council, for their ongoing support and patience as these important upgrades are delivered.”
