Floodplain Officer, Chrisy Clay, has represented Rous and our region at the 9th International Acid Sulfate Soil Conference in Adelaide held at the end of March. The four-day conference brought together leading academic scientists, researchers and land managers from around the world.

Acid sulfate soil is an important topic for Rous, with many of our flood mitigation assets located in acid sulfate soil areas. Given her experience in the field, Chrisy was selected to present at the conference. Chrisy spoke of the learnings from nearly three decades of land management and how large-scale changes are required to make an impact in her presentation entitled, “28 years of managing broadacre acid sulfate soils on the North Coast of NSW: what have we done and what’s left to do?”.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to attend the conference and represent Rous,” says Chrisy. “Our participation demonstrates Council’s commitment to managing acid sulfate soils and that our local experience is valued and of interest to other stakeholders. Delegates from across the world were interested to know how we work cooperatively with landowners and manage our drainage network.”

Chrisy’s participation demonstrates the considerable expertise that resides in our organisation. The conference is regarded as the premier interdisciplinary forum for the presentation of new advances and research results in the fields of acid sulfate soil research, policy and management practices.
