What is rural flood mitigation?
Rous rural flood mitigation provides protection for people, property, and infrastructure in the Richmond River floodplain. Our work extends through Ballina, Lismore and Richmond Valley local government areas, and includes managing rural flood infrastructure in Buckendoon, Bungawalbin, Dungarubba, East Wardell, Newrybar, Ruthven, Pimlico, South Ballina, Swan Bay, Teven, Tuckean, and Tuckurimba districts.
What we do
Rural flood mitigation is predominantly the active management of a network of floodgates, drains and levees during non-flood periods. This controlled movement of water allows tidal water to flow between rivers and creeks and the drainage system to improve its water quality, enhances the aquatic habitat, and allows fish to move more freely between bodies of water.

65 years of collaboration
For 65 years, we’ve worked with landowners, the sugar cane industry, our constituent councils and the NSW State Government to actively manage rural flood infrastructure along the Richmond River. Today this work is undertaken by Rous’ Rural Flood Mitigation team.
